This caused a surge in reported incidents of house parties in Airbnb-listed properties.

Recognising the gravity of the situation, Airbnb implemented a “global party ban”. Their initial approach involved banning guilty parties from making new bookings and placing restrictions on users under 25 without a positive review history. The result? A reported 55% drop in party incidents between 2020 and the subsequent year.

However, with a mission to eradicate the issue entirely, the BBC reports, Airbnb has now leveraged AI to anticipate potential problems.

Enter AI: Airbnb’s Proactive Solution

Airbnb’s new AI system, now functioning globally, scans for potential red flags when users attempt to book. For example, it evaluates:

  • The age of the account: Newly created accounts may signal trouble.
  • Proximity: If someone is trying to rent a place in their hometown, it might be for a party.
  • Duration of stay: A one-night booking during festive seasons like New Year’s Eve can be suspicious.

Naba Banerjee, who oversees safety and trust at Airbnb, illustrated the system’s efficacy by stating that it can potentially flag a New Year’s Eve booking from someone in the same city as likely to be a party. If the AI perceives too high a risk, it might block the booking or redirect the user to partner hotel websites. The primary goal? Building trust and assuring property owners that their investments are safeguarded.

For Airbnb hosts, this technological intervention is more than just data crunching. It provides peace of mind. Lucy Paterson, who rents out a property in Worcestershire, mentioned that while she’s always been cautious, Airbnb’s AI gives her additional confidence. This reassurance, coupled with the system’s capacity to refine its accuracy over time, suggests a positive trajectory for Airbnb and its hosts.

The Broader AI Application in Shared Economies

It’s worth noting that Airbnb isn’t alone in harnessing the power of AI. Turo, a prominent car-sharing platform, uses DataRobot AI to anticipate theft risks and determine rental prices. Moreover, through their integration with ChatGPT-4, Turo enables users to interact with the app via voice, further enhancing the user experience.

Albert Mangahas, Turo’s chief data officer, emphasised the role of AI in bridging trust between businesses and consumers. However, as Edward McFowland III from Harvard Business School points out, AI models are not infallible. False negatives, where genuine customers are mistakenly flagged, remain a challenge.

While Airbnb’s AI is a technological marvel, some hosts, like Lara Bozabalian in Toronto, prefer human intuition and experience. Bozabalian opts not to accept first-time renters, believing in the value of prior vetting.
