As the UK transitions towards greener energy solutions, heat pumps are becoming increasingly popular. But how noisy are they, and could they be a nuisance to your neighbours?
The government is pushing for millions of heat pumps to be installed in homes across the UK by 2030 to help reach net zero carbon emission targets. They are seen as a greener alternative to traditional gas boilers. However, concerns have been raised about the noise generated by these devices, which are installed outside homes and extract heat from the air.
How Noisy Are Heat Pumps, Really?
Modern heat pumps are much quieter than older models, with noise levels comparable to a fridge or dishwasher (around 40-60 decibels). However, concerns remain about the potential for noise pollution, especially in densely populated areas where multiple units could create a constant hum.
Some media reports, citing research presented at the Institute of Acoustics conference, claimed that heat pumps were “too noisy for millions of homes”. However, this research focussed on the noise level one metre from a neighbour’s door or window, which is actually quieter than current regulations allow.
What Does the Research Say?
A government review found that noise complaints about heat pumps are relatively low. A survey of households located near heat pumps revealed that only 4% of respondents noticed any noise from the devices, compared to 57% who reported hearing barking dogs.
Further research suggests that the noise generated by multiple heat pumps is unlikely to be significantly louder than the noise from a single unit located next door.
What Can Be Done to Reduce Noise?
- Proper installation: Positioning heat pumps away from property boundaries can significantly reduce noise impact.
- Modern technology: Newer heat pumps are designed to be quieter than older models.
- Careful operation: Running heat pumps constantly at a low level is quieter and more efficient than turning them on and off intermittently.
Balancing Noise Concerns with Environmental Benefits
While noise is a valid concern, it’s important to weigh it against the environmental benefits of switching from fossil fuels to greener heating solutions like heat pumps. Gas boilers, after all, also generate noise.
With proper installation, use of modern technology, and responsible operation, heat pump noise can be effectively managed. As we move towards a greener future, finding the right balance between sustainability and quality of life will be crucial.
