Thinking of buying a new build home? You could save thousands on energy bills if new rules on eco-friendly homes come into effect.
New research suggests that buying a new home built to the highest eco-friendly standards could save you £1,341 a year on energy bills! That’s enough for a family holiday every year!
The study by MCS Foundation found that a typical three-bedroom semi-detached house fitted with solar panels, a heat pump, top-notch insulation and battery storage would slash energy bills compared to less efficient homes.
Over a typical 25-year mortgage, these savings add up to a massive £46,612 – that’s like having an extra chunk of cash for a deposit or home improvements!
The government is currently considering making these eco features compulsory in new homes. While using solar panels and heat pumps are likely to get the green light, there’s still debate over whether battery storage will be mandatory.
But here’s the thing – the study found that combining solar panels and battery storage with a heat pump can slash energy bills by almost three times compared to just having a heat pump alone. So, having all three is the most cost-effective in the long run.
However, some experts are worried that developers might cut corners to save money and build houses quicker. They fear that pressure from developers could lead to lower standards in the new rules.
So, what does this mean for you? If you’re thinking of buying a new build home, make sure you ask about the eco features and what they mean for your energy bills. Choosing an eco-friendly home could save you a small fortune in the long run!
The government is expected to announce its final decision on the new rules next year.
