House Prices Hitting Rural Areas Hardest

New research reveals a rural housing crisis, with sky-high prices and a lack of affordable options forcing people out of their communities.

Finding somewhere decent to live in the countryside is a nightmare for many, with 69% of rural residents saying it’s a struggle to find a home in their local area, according to a new study by housing association Stonewater.

The main culprit? You guessed it – eye-watering house prices! A massive 70% of those struggling to find a home blame it on the cost, with a third (33%) pointing the finger at limited housing options driving up demand.

And it’s not just about finding any old roof over your head. Over half (53%) of those surveyed are crying out for more affordable options like shared ownership, council housing, and social housing. It’s clear that people want to stay in their communities but are being priced out.

The lack of affordable housing is causing a ripple effect across the countryside. A worrying 42% of rural residents believe it’s the main thing stopping people from moving to these areas. This means villages and small towns are missing out on new people and skills, hurting local businesses and services.

But it’s not just house prices causing headaches. The study also found that over half (55%) of rural residents are unhappy with public transport in their area, and almost half (45%) say the lack of essential services is a major downside.

Jonathan Layzell, from Stonewater, is calling on the government to step in and tackle this crisis head-on. He says building more affordable homes in rural areas is crucial to give communities the life support they desperately need.

Kate Henderson, chief executive of the National Housing Federation, agrees. She warns that the lack of affordable housing is putting the squeeze on rural communities, forcing people to uproot their lives and move away. This, she says, damages local economies and leaves communities struggling to survive.

The message is clear: we need to build more affordable homes in rural areas – and fast! Otherwise, we risk losing the heart and soul of our countryside.
