Possible Interest Rate Cut Coming in August, Economists Anticipate

Economists are gearing up for a potential interest rate reduction by the Bank of England, predicting it more likely to happen in August rather than the upcoming June meeting. Under the scrutiny of the Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee, led by Governor Andrew Bailey, there’s a growing anticipation. Currently, the base rate stands at a 16-year peak of 5.25%, a figure last witnessed on 20 June. The previous meeting this month concluded with a 7-2 decision to maintain the rate, indicating a divided committee.

Impact on Mortgage Rates

In response to the prospective rate cut, several lenders have proactively lowered their mortgage rates. Major banks such as HSBC, Barclays, and TSB have all made cuts to their mortgage borrowing costs over the past week. Despite these adjustments, data from the Rightmove tracker indicates that mortgage rates are still higher than they were a year ago. Specifically, the average 5-year fixed mortgage rate now sits at 5.02%, up from 4.59% last year, and the 2-year fixed rate has increased to 5.42% from 4.92%.

Why August?

The consensus among economists leans towards August for the anticipated rate cut. Out of 71 economists surveyed by Reuters, 38 believe the Bank will lower the rate to 5% in August. In contrast, 31 predict a June cut, and a minority of two expect it in September. Dean Turner, a Chief Economist at UBS Global Wealth Management, explains that the Bank of England might not rush the rate cut decision for June. “The economy is performing decently, allowing the Bank more time to monitor services inflation and wage pressures,” he noted.

Upcoming Inflation Data

The next inflation update, due this Wednesday, is crucial. Many are hopeful it will edge closer to the Government’s target of 2%, significantly down from the current 3.2%. This forthcoming data could be a deciding factor in the Bank’s timing and approach to adjusting the interest rate.
